Menu card design in Bengaluru: Kannada + English layout that sells (ಮೆನು ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸ)
Most menu cards in Bengaluru are designed once by the printer, then corrected with a pen for two years. A good design is not about fancy fonts. It is about a customer finding their dish and its price in five seconds, in the language they read. ಮೆನು ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ಓದಲು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿರಬೇಕು: dish name, price, done.
1. Two languages, one line each
Put the Kannada name and the English name on the same row, price on the right. Example: ಮಸಾಲೆ ದೋಸೆ / Masala Dosa ........ ₹70. Don't make two separate menus; customers flip and get lost. Near tech parks and PGs, add Hindi only for your top 10 dishes. Our Kannada + English menu guide has spellings for common dishes.
2. Sections in the order people order
- Darshini / tiffin: Tiffin (ತಿಂಡಿ) → Rice / Meals (ಊಟ) → Chats → Juices & Coffee/Tea.
- Cafe: Coffee → Cold drinks → Bakes → All-day food.
- Biryani / mess: Biryani → Meals → Sides & Kebabs → Desserts.
Put the 3 dishes that sell most at the top of each section. Most people pick from the first few rows.
3. Layout rules that matter
- Font size: at least 11-12 pt on print, 16 px on a phone. Kannada script needs a little more size than English to read well.
- No dotted leaders across a wide card; keep each column narrow so the price stays close to the name.
- Mark veg / non-veg with the green and red dot. Mark Jain or "no onion garlic" where you can do it.
- One accent colour. Dark text on a light background beats photos behind text every time.
- Leave "Prices include GST" or "+ GST" visible once, at the bottom.
4. Print vs QR: design for change
Milk, oil and gas prices move several times a year. Every move means a reprint, or pen marks on the card. The cheaper design: print only your name and a QR on the standee, and keep dishes and prices on a menu page you can change in a minute. Use our menu price calculator to see which prices need to change, and the no-reprint guide for the how.
5. What a designer or printer will charge
In Bengaluru a printed laminated menu card typically runs from a few hundred rupees for a simple A4 design to a few thousand for a multi-page card with photos, plus printing per copy. Each price change repeats the print cost. See QR standee costs in Bengaluru for the QR side.
