Menu price calculator for restaurants
Type what one plate costs you to make and the food cost % you aim for. You get a menu price including GST, rounded to a clean number your customers read easily.
How the price is worked out
Price before GST = plate cost x 100 / food cost %. Example: a masala dosa that costs Rs 38 to make at a 30% target gives Rs 126.67, plus 5% GST is Rs 133, rounded up to Rs 135.
What to include in plate cost
- Every ingredient by weight, including oil, ghee, gas share and chutney or sambar on the side.
- Packaging for parcels (box, cover, spoon), since takeaway has the same menu price.
- A small wastage allowance (3-5%) for items you prep in batches.
When milk or oil prices go up
Recalculate the items that use them most (coffee, tea, fried snacks, sweets) and change only those prices. If your menu is printed, that means a reprint; with a QR menu page you change it the same day. See how to update menu prices without reprinting.
This calculator is a guide, not tax advice. Check your GST rate with your accountant.
